Exploring new cuisines is my ultimate favorite foodie experience. Nothing can beat looking at a menu and being able to say you aren’t familiar with anything on it but your taste buds are ready for the new adventure! When Food Before Love received an invite to The African Table hosted by Chef Grace Odogbili I was ecstatic.

The event was hosted at MoCADA, The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts. The black and white artwork of Shantell Martin lined the walls of the exhibition gallery as the perfect background to allow the colorful dishes to be the main focus. Her theme focused on exploring change, flow and identity which can reflect this tasting event where guests were delving into Pan-African cuisine.

Curry Goat Ravioli-goat and curry with a twist

I’ve never had a craving for curry goat but having it presented in ravioli enticed me. I should not forget to mention that the flower was edible and yes, I did eat the whole thing! This and spoonful of jollof rice were the perfect combination for a burst of spice.

When I was speaking to a guest who was familiar with this cuisine, she mentioned that she was surprised by the tastings. These weren’t ordinary recipes that you can just order at an African restaurant, because Chef Grace puts her unique twist on everything. It was clear that everyone loved it because when the servers arrived with a fresh platter we all bolted to get our next plate.

Grains of Paradise Salad– 5 ancient grain salad, Persian cucumbers, tomatoes, Green Onion with North African vinaigrette

After we all fell in love with the divine tastings, Chef Grace appeared to greet us. She took time shaking hands and taking photos with every one to show her appreciation. Being able to meet the lady behind it all and see how humble she was made the event more meaningful.
