Queens was in complete devastation when Sugar Freak “closed” in early, 2017. Eating at Sugar Freak was like visiting a part of New Orleans for the day and everyone and their cousins are trying to get a seat. They have since relocated to 37-11 30th Ave in Long island City and the streets of NYC couldn’t be happier, including us! If you’re venturing out to Queens for dinner or brunch, Sugar Freak is going to be a must on your list.

Ambiance

As much as Sugar Freak screams New Orleans, it can remind me of a fancy farmer’s home sometimes. Mismatching chairs and portraits of roosters around the place just give off that vibe. They take good care of the antiques which are placed all over the restaurant. This includes everything from plates to even dressers. There’s certainly enough beads to go around.

Food

Due to relocation, there’s always a need for celebration. Sugar Freak celebrated by extending their menu some which is always the best way to bring in a new place. They make some of the softest biscuits, recently started doing seafood boils and have the best beignet sliders you could possibly dream of.

The sliders are real beignets split in half, featuring cole slaw, horseradish mayo and your choice of beer or chicken. I never really mix what I would consider dessert, with my proteins but this called for breaking the rules. Don’t leave without it.

They started to highlight the seafood options as baskets that come with fries, but I made it in right before the changes. The catfish is consistently cooked to perfection with a crisp outer layer and buttery like insides.

Catfish

If there’s any to dislike about Sugar Freak, it could be the wait but it’s worth it. I would give this 5 out of 5 beignets and am already planning to go back.
