I decided to take a trip to Los Tacos No. 1 because tacos are no longer just food to me. They’ve become a love language; a way to celebrate victories, big or small, or comfort after a long day. With those traits, when you hear the words “best taco in New York City” you don’t walk, you run as fast as you can. I did just that and went to check out Los Tacos No. 1. R

The Mood

Located inside Chelsea Market on 9th Ave between 15th and 16th Ave you’ll find Los Tacos No. 1 to be an authentic taste of Mexican cuisine. Los Tacos No.1  serves a classic menu that packs a serious punch of flavor. While wandering Chelsea Market, you’ll notice Los Tacos No. 1 by two distinctions, one being the large “Bienvenidos” sign plastered on a white brick wall and two, the long line of eager taco lovers. The line moves at a fair pace. It gives you enough time to pick the perfect taco combination while allowing extra time for your taco cravings to build.

The Food

The menu at Los Tacos No. 1 is broken down into Tacos & Tortas, Quesadillas & Mulas, and On a Plate. You have your choice of chicken, steak, pork or cactus as your protein as well as flour or corn tortillas. Most visitors opted for tacos while I spotted a few open faced quesadillas and only a couple with plates of cactus. I ordered 3 tacos con todo (with everything); one pollo asado on a corn tortilla, and two carne asada, one corn tortilla and one flour tortilla. The con todo style is served with guacamole, onions, cilantro and a verde salsa. All the flavors and textures meshed perfectly so I wouldn’t suggest any substitutions. The steak was tender and delicious. As was the chicken; I found each bite to be juicy with a nice kick of smokey flavor.

The Drinks

Drink options include tamarind juice, Jamaica (a Hibiscus juice) and Horchata. I went with the Jamaica. It’s a light drink, it isn’t sweet but pairs well with the tacos and is refreshing. While I didn’t try it, the Horchata was a popular choice among the other guests around me.

Overall, Los Tacos No. 1 is a great option for lunch or a weekend meal as you stroll through Chelsea Market. Their simple, straight to the point menu will allow you to mull over choices rather quickly and no matter what you order, it will definitely pack a punch! I give Lose Tacos 4.5 our 5 tacos!
