Some may argue that one of the greatest joys in life is grabbing a cold beer with a friend. Brewery owners, Chris Reeves and William Allen Moore, have plans to help you prioritize those simplicities with their startup, Down Home Brewing Company.

Humble Beginnings

Down Home Brewing is a craft beer company based in Atlanta, Georgia. The beer can currently be found in more than 130 locations across the state. Out of curiosity for home brewing, Reeves wanted to create something different than the big named brands that were always available to him. “It was just a beer thing,” Reeves recalls about his humble beginnings. He began bringing his beer samples to a racetrack he frequented in 2010. He’d pour people a sample and get their feedback. In 2014, he was be inspired to take steps to make Down Home Brewing official with the support of his family and friends.

In 2013, Moore came into the picture via an introduction from a mutual friend. Moore described his encounter with Reeves as “love at first taste.” Reeves had been sampling his beer within his network for some time. He eventually took Moore under his wing to share the beer making process. They had no idea they’d become the first African-American brewery to hit Georgia’s craft brew scene. And they are only one of a few in the country.

Entering the Market

Down Home Brewing officially launched in 2017 and began production in March 2018. The can art includes a cartoon rendition of Reeve’s grandfather, Hershel Thompson, on the packaging. Thompson was not a drinker, but he was a man of integrity who instilled the value of family into Reeves. His legacy lives on with Down Home, a story that showcases the importance of remembering where we came from and honoring our roots. Thompson will have a new look that tells the story of the flavor profiles as each new beer is released. The beer company celebrated its one year anniversary at City Winery in Atlanta late last year.

As a first-time beer drinker, you can purchase their Georgia Hooch IPA, which is currently on the market. You can also try their new T-Pom Pomegranate Wheat Ale. Not sure if it’s available at your local bar? Moore encourages all beer drinkers to remember the power of their voice. If their beer isn’t at your local spot, request the product by name.
