On Thursday, March 14, we’re hosting the second installation of our Roots and Vines talk. Roots and Vines is our community-focused series of talks that educate current and future food and wine lovers on a variety of topics. It’s all done in an environment that is comfortable for all attendees. The event encourages a communal conversation amongst guests and panelist that tackle issues in the food community that are often overlooked.

This session will be about the challenges and benefits of becoming vegan. We’ll also tackle food security/access and how classism plays a role in our food choices and lifestyles. Lastly, there will also be a segment with an esteemed wine expert who can speak to what natural and vegan wines are and what to look for when shopping.

This event is for everyone, you don’t have to be vegan to attend! Get to know our panelists below.

Omowale Adewale

Omowale Adewale

Omowale Adewale is a Brooklyn-born and bred community organizer, founder of G.A.ME and BlackVegFest and former boxing and kickboxing champion certified in plant-based nutrition. Wale is a father of three and the author of “An Introduction to Veganism and Agricultural Globalism.”

Yemi Amu

Yemi Amu is the co-founder of Oko Farms and the Farm Manager at the Moore Street Farm. She directs all of Oko Farms’ programs including education, design/build projects and community related activities.

Amu has facilitated the creation and maintenance of 20 edible spaces at New York schools and community organizations including a rooftop farm in Crown Heights and a quarter acre farm at the Weeksville Heritage Center that included poultry and bees.

She also worked with NEBHDCo’s (Northeast Brooklyn Housing Development)  Community Healthy Food Initiative where she managed 2 farms that sourced the Golden Harvest Food Pantry.

Amu earned her Masters Degree in Health and Nutrition Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Alicia Kennedy

Alicia Kennedy is a Brooklyn-based, Long Island-born writer whose work focused on the intersection of food and politics. Her podcast, Meatless, features conversations with chefs, writers, and more on the ethics of eating.

We’re so excited to meet you on March 14! The event is free, but be sure to register beforehand. Complimentary refreshments and wine will be served at 6:30 p.m., the event will start at 7 p.m.
