If you’re here because you love food, you’re in the right place.

I’m here to help you step your food game up to the next level. Here at Food Before Love, we are dedicated to educating you on all things food. I recently did a live story on our Instagram page sharing “5 Lessons Every Foodie Should Learn in Their 30s.” For those of you who missed it, luckily you have another opportunity to catch some of these gems dropped.

Here are a few of the lessons we covered:

Enhance your food vocabulary

There are many words that give you an idea of what a dish is, what it includes and how it is prepared. For example, if you order a “seared” tuna, you will know that it is cooked only on the outside. With this information you can make an educated decision on what you want. This can help you have a better idea of what you are ordering and what to expect. If you are unfamiliar with a word, that is your opportunity to educate yourself by looking it up or asking someone. It’s better to be uncomfortable for a moment and ask than to be uncomfortable every time you encounter this word in the future. You could be missing out on something great by not ordering it just because you aren’t sure what it is.

Get familiar with dining out etiquette

We have all endured the dreaded experience of dining out with a group. Of course, it can be fun–lots of laughs and a great meal with several of your favorite people. However, there are those moments that are not so fun like splitting the check, waiting for the late people to arrive before being seated, etc. In this video, I shared a few tips that I have found helpful for a smoother group dinner:

  1. “False time” – give everyone some cushion in the arrival time by telling them to meet before the time of the actual reservation.
  2. Be on time!
  3. Bring cash to make it easier to pay the bill.

Step your game up at home

As much as we all love going out to eat, it’s not something we do for every meal. There are a few benefits to learning how to recreate some of our favorite dishes at home:

  1. Make the dish whenever you want, in the convenience of your own space.
  2. Remix the dish however you want – i.e. add spice, try a different meat, eliminate the onions, etc.
  3. You can save your money for other things you want to buy.

I hope these tips have been helpful. You can find the rest of the lessons and catch the full replay on YouTube. Also, for extra credit, you can watch our videos on “Common Foods You’re Probably Pronouncing Wrong”: Episode 1. Episode 2. Episode 3.
