The weather in New York City has begun teasing us with beautiful 80 degree weather. You know what that means, farmer’s markets are opening up! Spring, is that you?

The warm weather brings with it some of our favorite things like rooftop brunches and dining al fresco. Another favorite to add to the list is farmer’s markets! Greenmarkets are sprinkled around the city giving you a new way to spend your weekends. It’s something fun to do with friends and family plus a great way to get fresh fruit and veggies  into your diet.

Brooklyn

Carroll Gardens Greenmarket Carroll St, between Smith and Court St.

Hours: 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Sundays, year-round

Located across from Carroll Park, at this farmer’s market you’ll find a variety of artisan breads from Bread Alone, fresh meats from Haywoods Fresh and pretty flowers you can shop year round. It’s a neighborhood favorite that’s become a weekly routine for many locals. It may be small in size but those who frequent weekly rave about the quality and freshness.

Fort Greene Greenmarket, Washington Park

Hours: 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Open Saturdays, year-round

Centuries old brownstones surround this Brooklyn Greenmarket that runs alongside historic Fort Greene Park. Every Saturday, live music by local artists lure in shoppers and listeners. In addition, Dan Madura Jr Farms is on site with exotic mushrooms and popcorn from Orange County, NY plus fresh baked breads from She Wolf Bakery out of Kings County, NY.

Queens

Forest Hills Greenmarket, South side of Queens Blvd at 70th Avenue

Hours: 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Sundays, year-round

Located across the Forest Hills Post Office, seafood, vegetables and local honey are sold in abundance. American Pride Seafood offers wild-caught fish and shellfish from Suffolk County, NY. From honey to lip balm, Nature’s Way Farm provides various solutions for skin and body care. The market also offers cooking demonstrations throughout the year to give you a few tips on the best ways to use your new fresh goods.

Astoria Greenmarket, 14th St between 31st Ave and 31st Rd.

Hours: 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesdays, July 11 to November 28

For a weekday option in Queens, the Astoria Greenmarket is open from mid-July until late November. Known for their selection of herbs, greens and peppers, Angel Family Farm gives you the necessary ingredients to throw together an authentic salsa.The farm’s second vendor Migliorelli Farm offers vegetables and orchard fruit from Dutchess County, NY.

Manhattan

Union Square Greenmarket, North and West sides of Union Square Park

Hours: 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday year-round

NYC’s flagship Greenmarket is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, year round. The large variety of fruit, meat and breads brings anywhere up to 60,000 shoppers on a market day. Every Wednesday and Saturday from March to December, the market hosts a beer and spirits pop-up along with book signing on Saturday, May to December.

Columbia Greenmarket, Between 114th St. and 116th Streets

Hours: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sundays, year-Round

This Upper West Side market runs on Thursday and Sunday, catering to different crowds each day.  Thursday is for the busy weekday crowd; the market is filled with university students and staff from nearby St. Luke’s Hospital. Body & Soul attends year round, selling baked goods from King’s County, NY. Maple syrup and other maple products from Delaware County, NY are available from Roxbury Mountain Maple during their growing season.

Staten Island

Saint George Greenmarket, St. Mark’s Place and Hyatt St.

Hours: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays, year-round

With its hilltop location,  St. George Greenmarket offers a beautiful view of the New York City skyline. Loyal shoppers are known to line up bright and early on Saturday mornings for first dibs on seafood from American Pride Seafood and fresh fruit from Rabbit Run Farm.

Staten Island Mall Greenmarket, Marsh Avenue & Ring Road (Commuter Lot Behind Macy’s)

Hours: 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays, May 5-December 22

A small group of vendors gather at the Staten Island Mall on Saturdays from May to December. Homemade pies from Francesca’s Bakery are always a hit. Cooking demonstrations and special celebrations also take place, keeping local shoppers coming back each week, both for the fun events and healthy produce options.

Bronx

Poe Park Greenmarket, E 192nd St. Brown Grand Concourse & Valentine

Hours: 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesdays, June 26-November 27

Located on the south side of Poe Park, this space has become a place where families and locals to come together for decades. Nolasco’s Farm offers specialty Mexican herbs and spices as well as vegetables and eggs from Orange County, NY. Recipe exchange events are also a major component that adds to the diverse, family feel of the market.  

Wholesale Greenmarket, 290 Halleck Street (at Vieke Avenue)

Hours: 2 a.m.-8 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, April 11-November 17

This Bronx location is the only wholesale farmers market in NYC. Over 100 local vendors sell fruit, plants, vegetables and herbs at competitive prices. The products come straight from the farm and are all harvested less than 24 hours before being sold at the market.
