For me, growing up Puerto Rican, meant that Café Bustelo® was your morning pick me up. Even as a child, I remember waking up to the aroma of it’s bold flavors in the morning. It was no surprise to see a can on the dining room table and for a hot cup of coffee to follow. It was a given that if you stopped by the house in the morning, you’d be given a fresh cup and a piece of buttered bread.

This was also a given for etiquette at my Tia’s (aunt’s) houses in Puerto Rico. There wasn’t a time that someone was stopping in and not getting Café Bustelo served, however, they enjoyed it. This too, has become tradition, where with the welcoming spirit of Café Bustelo, sharing was encouraged once the pot was brewing. Nowadays, you can pick up the K-cups of the coffee but back then, we only had the ground version or the brick coffee to choose from. Luckily, all forms are available at my local ShopRite where I went to keep up with traditions and purchased the can.

Cafe Bustelo in ShopRite

It was customary to serve the coffee with bread and butter but we both know breakfast can be so much more fun. Instead, I enjoy serving them with sticky buns which are an easy breakfast recipe that pairs well with Café Bustelo. The wonderful part is being able to truly taste the coffee, no matter how much milk and sugar you might need. Those deep, authentic flavors are important to any morning start. Pecans

Ingredients

In my angst to have sticky buns, I purchased a pre-made dough which cut my prep time in half. After setting the oven to 375 degrees, I began to mix the topping ingredients together. I find that honey is a better substitute for corn syrup so I mixed that in with melted butter, brown sugar and honey roasted chopped pecans.

After greasing my baking pan, I layered the topping into the pan to sit for a few minutes. At this point, I decided to put some coffee on the pot to join the party. To follow, I mixed granulated sugar with ground cinnamon in a plastic bag and dropped the dough in to coat it. I separated it into 6-7 pieces and placed them in the dish to bake for 15-20 minutes. Sooner than later, the decadent sticky buns were ready and since I was already sipping on coffee, I was ready to take on rest of my day.. What pairing would you have chosen to go with your cup of Café Bustelo?
