Andrea Mathis, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and owner of Beautiful Eats & Things is sharing her quick tips for healthy eating.

Trying to eat healthier and live a healthier lifestyle can be challenging for some people. Let’s face it, temptation is all around us! There’s easy access to most fast food restaurants and foods with the least amount of nutritional value are usually the cheapest in the grocery store. If you have picky kids, feeding them can be another challenge within itself! I’ve put together a few simple tips and recipes that will show you how healthy eating can be very easy and delicious!

Cheesy Cauli-Hashbrown Casserole

Hashbrown casserole is a well-known dish, mainly because of it’s creamy, cheesy goodness! Who wouldn’t enjoy a plate piled high with cheese and potatoes? As a way to make this favorite dish a little healthier, I substituted half of the shredded potatoes for cauliflower. I also used non-fat Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. The taste was just as good as the original and no one could tell the difference!

Gourmet Veggie and Ricotta Cheese Pizza

Pizza is a very popular food! This dish can be prepared in a variety of ways, but the most common way is to top it with lots of meat and cheese! As a way to enjoy this favorite food without compromising your waistline, try preparing a veggie pizza. Choose low-fat mozzarella, and top the pizza with your favorite veggie combinations!

Gooey Cinnamon Rolls

When most individuals adapt a healthier lifestyle, they often think that pastries and other yummy desserts are off limit. By altering a recipe and making a few healthy substitutions, you can still enjoy a warm pastry such as these Gooey Cinnamon Rolls! These cinnamon rolls are made with a 2-ingredient dough that consists of only Greek yogurt and flour. For the filling, I used low-fat margarine and reduced the sugar content. The result was delicious and certainly satisfying!

Don’t stop at just these recipes! Once you realize how easy it can be to tweak your favorite recipes, you’ll be unstoppable. Here’s how to make eating healthy attainable:

  • Use non-fat Greek Yogurt in place of sour cream. This will help to lower the fat and calorie content in your recipes.
  • Replace heavy cream for skim milk or unsweetened nut milk.
  • Replace half of your pasta or rice with fresh veggies.
  • When baking desserts, try reducing the required sugar amount by a third. Usually dessert recipes will turn out just fine with less sugar.
