I’m extremely confused as to how I’ve missed the amazingness that is Luke’s Lobster but extremely pleased that it is finally in my life. I swung by the upper east side location in NYC and grabbed the combo which included a pickle, lobster roll and chips. I decided to add a Mexican cola to my meal which was super sweet but tasty.

I wasn’t sure what to expect because I then realized that I never had a lobster roll before. Seriously, where have I been? My first thought when the roll reached was, this is small, accompanied by a serious side eye. I was fooled because it was jam packed with fresh, vibrant lobster and I found that out soon enough. The most amazing thing about this lobster roll which also intrigued me the most, was the bread. Not only was it oddly shaped, unlike a hero but more like a man made lobster holder – for real, they made the perfect lobster holder bread. Where do you guys find this stuff? But the bread was for sure toasted and lathered with butter that made it’s presence known with each bite. Even through the hearty lobster, which was very cold compared to the bread, the butter just popped out like it was the perfect amount of love. This is what I mean when I say this is where you can find love on the menu, because Luke’s Lobster – that’s love.

After two long hours of waiting for Lauryn Hill to show up and a few long hours of her interesting performance, I was ready for bed just to be that much closer to brunch. As I am accustomed to the BYOC (C for champagne) policy in Philadelphia, The red wine where the hell was the champagne? went in the car for my first time at Rose Petals Cafe. I absolutely hate waiting for a free table but it’s usually worth it for brunch in other cities and we skipped the table in front of us, ha!

The menu is drenched with words that make your stomach growl, and a million different ways to serve up waffles and french toast. Rose Petals Cafe seemed like the kind of the place you needed to try about five times to get a real taste of it all and believe me, I have every intention of coming back. The service needs some improvement as it took a long time for us to get wine glasses, and some water but I felt positive about my meal making up for it.

As recommended, I opted for the catfish over a waffle smothered in gravy with a side of grits. I feel myself turning into a grits snob *covers face* but these had a pretty good consistency and the temperature was just right. Then the food coma came on. There was no need for syrup because the waffle and catfish were both completely covered in the gravy which was the best chance to try it all together. The catfish was very tender which worked well against the waffle which wasn’t as soft as expected. They did pair well together but you must come with an appetite because it’s a dish not made for the weak.

Aside from Chicago, DC is probably next up on one of my favorite places to visit that has a growing food culture. That could possibly explain how delighted I was to be invited to a Negra Modelo Event at Union Market. Knowing a little something about event planning, I was super impressed by how they remodeled the venue to make the evening the success it was. There’s no better feeling than being at your absolute comfort level, about to enjoy some food and unlimited beer.

Even better than that, is dealing with staff that’s just a riot. One of the servers kept coming over to feed us the wild mushroom and goat cheese puffs and couldn’t stop making me laugh. It really gave me the sense that Negra Modelo is a friendly brand and I could look to really great future times over a few glasses. Amongst the passed dishes were sliders, as well as, some live food stations serving up carnitas tacos and a stuffed poblano pepper with rice. Nonstop Negra Modelo was paired with each dish in hopes to find The Perfect Complement …. I think the slider won me over  the most.

The guest chefs for the evening were Chef Rick Bayless and Chef Chris Cosentino who had fairly good chemistry and it was most interesting to watch them cook together, especially since there was an overhead cam grabbing all the action. Chef Bayless is hilarious and even told us he feels sorry for anyone out there without a high speed blender as he put together his chili. Take notes chefs! Chef Cosentino prepared a steamed clams and chorizo dish and really touched on the importance of sharing food, how it brings us all together. As I grabbed another glass of Negra Modelo, I agreed with his sentiments.

As much as it was enjoyable to listen to the chefs share different ways to incorporate Negra Modelo in their dishes, I was ready for dessert. Chef Bayless had just answered my question on the most creative way he’s used the beer in a dish and his answer, a chili chocolate ice cream, had me curious. Luckily, chocolate was on the menu with a chocolate caramel cupcake with a Negra Modelo Caramel sauce. How fun are infused desserts? To add onto the evening, the event was social media powered to unlock amazing gifts which certainly left me encouraged to continue finding #ThePerfectComplement
