Lure Fish Bar was on the NYC Restaurant Week list and it’s so much of a Gem, it’s almost too good to be on that list.

The menu they offered for the week was appealing and I was so excited to be meeting my sweetheart there for dinner on a Friday Night, not to mention, restaurant week was coming to an end so we had to do this right. Imagine the awe I was in because the place looks like the inside of a boat. You have to walk down steps to get inside and the windows are above you. The key to this though, is that the windows are in circular shapes, as a boat would be, and the entire set up looks as such. You know I love me a cute spot to eat. What I may love more than that is a great drink, and the strawberry mojito I had was just that.

We started the night with the shrimp tempura that had a spicy mayo on it. The batter, if it even was a batter, was very light and really allowed me to taste the shrimp despite the condiments. We also got to try the salmon tartar which was delicate yet delightful, once you get past the somewhat mushy texture.

I am much more of a Salmon girl myself, however, I decided to do the Cod that evening. The cod came with a honey glaze. It was very soft, made fresh and had a good chew to it. The lentils complimented the dish even though I was skeptical about them at first. There still happened to be salmon at my table which was just as delicate at the tartar and had a great pop of flavors.

The chocolate molten cake had some salted caramel ice cream to accompany it, along with caramelized popcorn and chocolate pudding to fill it. I went for the raspberry and chocolate pot, my favorite mix of all things sweet. It was like having a mousse in a bowl but a more liquid texture and hints of tart all around.

Listen, the best french toast I have had in my entire LIFE is at Lokal in Chicago. A friend and I shared this and, with all due respect to her, I wish I hadn’t. This was stuffed French toast filled with bananas and nutella, topped with whipped cream, fresh strawberries and blue berries; made softer than Lord knows. Can you say Foodgasm?

This French toast was more than delightful. I could probably eat this everyday for the rest of my life and never get tired of it. We both agreed that it tasted like funnel cake. Lokal also does a bottomless brunch and has great artwork all over the restaurant. I then ordered the steak and eggs to really get my dining on. I got the eggs sunny side up which was the best idea, and .the steak well which was tough but not quite overdone. Luckily, it was juicy enough to make it memorable and delicious.

I liked that Lokal wasn’t too busy and we were left alone for the most part which was different but refreshing. The place was entirely laid back so we were able to enjoy our food and keep the day going.

But it’s still Chicago week here at Food Before love and if you haven’t booked a flight to go there yet due to my recap, you must be a fool. I am getting super nostalgic about this place, like you would think this is home for me so I KNOW I’m selling some of you on it.

When we were in Chicago it was restaurant week ofcourse and we decided to dine at Texas De Brazil.

texas de brazil

Marcy and I had already made plans to go to the New York location, so the fact that it was about 10 steps away from our hotel, really sold us on making a reservation immediately. Little did we know that after Kumas Corner , we’d be walking into a buffet. You couldn’t tell me that Marcy?

The best part about this place is that they walk around with all different types of meats on a stick for consumption at your convenience. Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon, brazilian sausage, lamb chops and then some , are passed, served fresh and ready to eat during your entire dinner.Literally, during the ENTIRE dinner, we almost didn’t want anymore but they do say Brazilian meat is the best ……It wasn’t super loud in here either so I really got to enjoy the company of my date #heyboo . I also ordered something like a pina colada which was delicious while Marcy had a classic mojito.

For Dessert, which was the real winner of the evening, we thoroughly enjoyed the chocolate mousse cake and the cheesecake.

The chocolate cake is for true chocolate lovers only because it truly was a triple dose of chocolate yum. It was rich, moist and seemed to be never-ending but I wasn’t complaining! The cheesecake according to Marcy was nothing short of “AMAZING” . The package for the dessert to take home was the cutest thing too! Maybe it’s not just the meat they’re good for…..The service here was truly delightful. Our server, Andres was attentive, kind and funny so we really appreciated that aspect of the experience.

All of the sides served in the buffet were good and because of the variety of items it wasn’t boring either. We had absolutely no complaints about anything. Talking about this makes me want to go there this weekend but definitely , if you can’t make it to Chicago for this, try New York.

Rock It Bar Mac and Cheese

I took our lessons from Kumas and applied them when I went over to Rockit Bar which was conveniently located close to my hotel. So I walked over in the snow for what I think was the mac and cheese winner that weekend. I Had the “Sweet Emotions” cocktail to start which was actually better than I thought it would be. I was skeptical of the mango puree for fear of the cocktail being pulp like but it had a smooth finish and wasn’t too tart.

Due to the macaroni and cheese from Kumas, we were worried about the portion size of the buffalo mac n cheese here so we asked to share it. The staff was very accommodating and tended to our needs all night despite how busy the place was. The mac here really was phenomenal, with the perfect amount of kick and cheesy enough to make us return. It was a great idea to share but it almost makes you wish you hadn’t.

To add to the fun, we had sweet potato fries that came with a brown sugar salt on top of them that made the perfect finish to our experience.

Kumas Corner Mac and Cheese

Prior to this trip, I was on the hunt for the best mac and cheese Chicago had to offer. I was able to squeeze two places in, and one of them was Kumas.

Kumas is actually a burger joint but rumor has it that they are “the best” at this mac and cheese thing. But huge thanks to our friend Breezy who raved about this place and made sure we made it here. Before we could decide on eeeeeats, we got to drinking.

Kumas Corner Milk Stout

Because I’m a Guinness girl and they weren’t carrying it, the bartender recommended starting with a milk stout. It was essential to my burger pairing that was to come.  I ordered and recommend the poblano burger but do come with an appetite as the portions are huge.

Kumas Corner Poblano Burger

The Kumas poblano burger has a roasted poblano pepper, bacon, cheddar and Monterey jack cheese, a house made ranchero sauce, and  tortilla strips on top. I literally had to cut the burger in four pieces and I almost cried because we had dinner in two hours and I had a feeling I wasn’t going to make it. But this burger was beyond delicious and it came with fries.

Kumas Corner Mac and Cheese

Kumas is very popular and the wait could be a while so try and sit at the bar if there’s room.

You can make your own mac and cheese here, so my friend opted for chicken and corn in hers. I thought it was great mac but I was busy with the  burger so I left her to attend to it, which ended up in us taking it home. The portion was so overwhelming, which in a way made it hard to enjoy. But for days on end you can be enjoying left overs and talking about it till days end.

Bongo Room menu

One thing I disliked about Chicago was the amount of waitresses underestimating my ability to consume more than one meal. Every single time I ordered two meals, they would give me a judgmental side eye and advise me to just get one thing. Uhhhh, I’m pretty sure I know what I’m doing here Ma’am, thanks though. So Friday morning, we had Bongo Room  for breakfast. Much love to my friend Kim’s aunt who originally recommended this place for our last visit.

Bongo Room tea

Marcy got grapefruit juice and I ordered the super sweet lemonade. Started with two eggs any style, home fries, and toast. The home fries were very well seasoned, smokey even, and I couldn’t get enough of it, even when I was full.

Bongo Room eggs and hash

The omelette Marcy got was a Churriso Avocado and Potato omelette which she claims was everything she hoped for. I had these red velvet pancakes; they actually had a white chocolate anglaise on the cakes along with toasted walnuts. I won’t lie, I was overwhelmed. Maybe the lady was right.

Bongo Room pancakes

The anglaise was laid on thick, literally, yet it didn’t over power the red velvet taste. The walnuts only added to the experience and to quote myself I said “This taste like ice cream”. Can you imagine having breakfast, tired and hung over from the night before and you try something you know you will love, and it taste like ice cream? Hmmm, yet people wonder why I want to move to Chicago.

Bongo Room fruit

They need Mimosas at this location, its BYOB but if they had it there, it just might have been gold. Either way, this place is amazing.
